APX-ENDEX Total Monthly Volumes Record High; Power NL Spot Hits a New Monthly Record; TTF Gas Futures Grow Rapidly

  • Futures total volumes up by 53%; TTF Gas futures up by over 200%
  • Power NL spot record high with 2.72 TWh

APX-ENDEX, the Anglo-Dutch energy exchange, today announces November volumes of its power and gas exchanges. The total volumes increased 35% compared to the previous year as 41.40 TWh was recorded on the exchange; the APX-ENDEX futures markets totalled 24.54TWh, up by 53% year-on-year, while the spot markets recorded 16.86 TWh.

 

Power

In November 2009, a total of 12.01 TWh was registered on the APX-ENDEX power markets.

 

In November 2009 Power NL futures recorded a total volume of 7.71 TWh, of which 1.82 TWh was traded on the exchange and 5.89 TWh was registered for clearing via the OTC clearing service. The volumes of Power BE futures recorded 473 GWh. A total of 376 trades were registered on the power futures markets.

 

The APX-ENDEX Power spot markets had another successful month with growing volumes with this month’s volumes exceeding November 2008 levels by 26%, totalling 3.83 TWh. Power NL continued its growth with volumes up by 34% year-on-year, reaching the highest ever monthly volume with 2.72 TWh. Power NL Intraday experienced its second record month in row with volumes of 6.96 GWh. Power UK spot volumes remained steady year-on-year with 1.11 TWh. 90,160 trades were registered on the APX-ENDEX power spot markets.

 

Gas

A total of 29.39 TWh was registered on the APX-ENDEX gas markets during the month of November.

 

The TTF Gas futures’ November volumes went up rapidly as the monthly volumes exceeded ’08 volumes by over 200%, recording a total of 16.36 TWh; 6.35 TWh was traded on the exchange and 10.01 TWh was registered for clearing via the OTC clearing service. A total of 171 trades were registered on the gas futures market.

 

The Gas spot volumes maintained the continuous growth year-on-year as total monthly volumes for November reached 13.03 TWh, up by 14% year-on-year. Gas UK spot recorded a total of 12.89 TWh, up by 13%. Gas NL spot volumes recorded 85.21 GWh while Gas ZEE spot volumes reached 50.47 GWh. 5,922 trades were registered on the gas spot markets in November.

 

New Memberships

Saen Energy B.V. extended its existing membership from Power NL futures to APX-ENDEX Power NL spot. APX-ENDEX welcomed Lampiris SA as a new trading member on TTF Gas futures as well as Belgian Power futures. Total Gas & Power Limited has extended their membership to Power NL futures. Total Gas & Power Limited is already a member of TTF Gas futures.

 

APX-ENDEX Starts Cooperation with Belpex and Nord Pool Spot

APX-ENDEX, Belpex and Nord Pool Spot have signed a Principles of Cooperation to develop and establish an integrated cross-border intraday trading solution, with the ultimate goal of facilitating a single market across Europe. The solution will be based on Elbas technology, and is first established for the Netherlands and Belgium, and is followed by integrating the market with the existing Nordic/German Elbas market.

 

Clearing and Settlement Services

Belpex – Belgian Power Exchange

In November 2009, APX-ENDEX cleared 853 GWh of power for the day-ahead market of Belpex, the Belgian power exchange. APX-ENDEX provides a number of core services to Belpex, including the daily operations, clearing and settlement procedures for the Belgian day-ahead market.

 

Carbon

Climex, a pan-European marketplace for trading and auctioning environmental commodities and energy contracts, recorded 637 kilotonnes (both Over-the-Counter and exchange traded volumes) on its spot market. The volume weighted average price (VWA) for November 2009 was €13.71/tonne. APX-ENDEX clears and settles transactions traded on the Climex trading platform.

 

APX Group Indices

In November, the Dutch power index for the Day-Ahead Market, APX NL DAM Index, had a monthly average price of € 36.11/MWh.

 

APX Power UK’s Spot Base Load Index (derived from APX Power UK’s Reference Price Data (RPD)) had a high of £ 40.67/MWh on 10 November and a low of £ 27.67/MWh on 25 November. The Spot Peak Load Index (also RPD-derived) had a high of £ 50.95/MWh on 13 November and a low of £ 31.20/MWh on 29 November.

 

The SAP index, based on APX Gas UK’s OCM trades, experienced a high at 29.15 p/therm on 9 November and a SAP low of 18.74 p/therm on 1 November. The SMP Buy had a high of 31.00 p/therm on 27 November and a low of 21.40 p/therm on 1 November. The SMP Sell reached a high of 28.20 p/therm on 9 November and a low of 17.79 p/therm on 1 November.
