Belpex
Belpex is the short term, physical power exchange for the delivery and off-take of electricity on the Belgian hub. Belpex facilitates anonymous, cleared trading in 3 different market segments, namely a day ahead market segment (DAM), a continuous day ahead market segment (CoDAM) and a continuous intraday market segment (CIM). Belpex’ day ahead market is coupled with its two neighbours, APX-ENDEX in the Netherlands and EPEX in France.
The shareholders of Belpex are APX-ENDEX, EPEX (French Power Exchange), RTE (French Transmission System Operator), TenneT (Dutch Transmission System Operator) and Elia System Operator (Belgian Transmission System Operator). Endowed with a 3 million euro equity capital, Belpex shares are owned initially by APX-ENDEX (10%), Elia (60%), Powernext (10%), RTE (10%) and TenneT (10%). APX-ENDEX owns 10% of the share capital in Belpex.
Besides being a shareholder, APX-ENDEX also provides a number of core services to Belpex, including the daily operations, clearing and settlement procedures for the Belgian day-ahead and continuous market. Belpex uses the same EuroLight trading platform as the APX-ENDEX's Dutch spot power markets.
The Belpex Day-Ahead Market was launched simultaneously with the Trilateral Market Coupling in November 2006. Belpex has been able to offer a reliable price from the start; an essential role of the exchange. The trading results in 2007 were encouraging: the daily average volume was 20,788 MWh, more than 8 % of the electricity consumption in Belgium. At the end of 2008, the daily average volume had increased 30,372 MWh and the exchange counted 32 members, representing a wide range of players.
